About the Program

The FIU Preapprenticeship Program is a free, 6-month certificate program that prepares workers for entry-level construction jobs across Florida. Participants will learn the basics of working in construction to qualify for in-field construction jobs. During their classroom instruction, participants will learn the importance of job safety and other core values for a job in construction. Throughout the course, participants will also receive hands-on experience for the construction craft of their choosing. Upon completion of the program, graduates will hold various certificates required for working in entry-level construction jobs.

Collaboration

Florida International University (FIU) in support of the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity-Workforce Recovery Training Program (WRTP), offers the FIU Preapprenticeship Program in construction skills. The FIU Preapprenticeship Program provides a complete curriculum of nationally recognized certifications as an Accredited Training Sponsor by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER).

The certifications are tied to in demand existing construction crafts. Leadership and communications skills training are included in the curriculum and are specially designed for assistance with construction industry employability.

Construction jobs in Miami are in demand! Construction is among the nation’s top five industries for good jobs that do not require a bachelor’s degree. In Florida, construction is the fourth among the top industries for well-paying, non-BA jobs. The average pay for construction workers without a bachelor’s degree in Florida is $52,000. A need for workers to fill construction job openings is also expected to grow 12 percent by 2026.
